The ultimate gift guide for mom. Not necessarily your mom, it can also be a mom. Especially if it seems that the only hobby she has is being a mom. Then it is me, a mom without hobbies, unless you count being a mom!
Every year, when my birthday rolls by, I annoy everybody with the same answer to the same tedious question:
Them: “what do you want for your birthday?”
Them: “there must be something, please think”
Me: “I don’t need anything”
Them: “birthdays are not about needing, it is about wanting. What do you want!”
Me: “I don’t know, give me a voucher….”
Them: leave in a huff
And then I get a necklace. Which I love, but – again? So this year I thought I will make it easier for everybody, including myself, by giving out this handy gift guide. If you have ever wondered what to give a mom who has no hobbies, read on!
Something beautiful to look at, but also a little practical. That is generally my rule of thumb. So here goes:
- Moroccan tea glasses
I actually have 2 of these, and I love them. They are red, which I love, and they make the act of drinking ice tea so special and different. I love things that not only look nice but are practical as well. When décor is more than just pretty to look at.
These ones are available from Moroccan Lifestyle
- Large (almost over-sized) bowls
A large bowl, big enough to hold it with two hands, and perfect for some of the biggest trends – from Buddha bowls to smoothie bowls, to comfort soup in the colder months. Beautiful big bowls are the perfect gift for someone who loves feeding her family, and want nothing for herself.
I love these Basalt Serving Bowls from Yuppiechef
- A beautiful and unusual flower vase
Something that will make her think of you every time she gets flowers. I believe you can never have too many vases, because you can never have too many plants and flowers in your house. I love green and inviting nature into my home with leaves and flowers all around. Just have a look at Mr Price Home’s selection
I especially love these two
- Wine pearls
One of the best products I have found, ever! If your mom loves wine, at the correct temperature, but detest adding ice to her wine in order to get it chilled then this is the product for her! Stylish, pretty, and oh so useful – you chill these beauties, then pop them into your glass when your wine becomes too hot. Because they are chilled themselves, so no ice, they cannot water down the wine as they melt. Once they have done their job, rinse them and place back in the freezer for next time. So easy! They are difficult to come by in RSA, but you can import them through this site Uncommon Goods
This is how they look:
- A special display bowl
Mom will love this if she is into making her home space beautiful, and of course if she likes displaying things. I have a designated bowl in every room for those odds and ends that invariable end up on a side table or the dining room table, perfect for keys, hair bands, unread mail, etc. In the kitchen we have one for fruit, and in the bathroom my jewellery is stored in a flat bowl. You can find them almost anywhere, but for a trendy option try stores like Boardmans, Woolworths and Mr Price Home.
My choices at the moment
- A hanging planter or herb kit
If mom loves cooking with fresh herbs, give her the gift of growing them herself. You can give her smaller individual planters, or a kit that she can use to grow to her heart’s content. For something totally different, why not get her a hydroponic garden? Online at Yuppiechef
Hanging planters for the more old-school
- A safety razor
If mom is like me, and trying to go as zero waste as possible, then investing into a safety razor on her behalf can be a brilliant gift. Buy her her own razor, with a pack of blades, and your gift will be treasured for a long time. Get one here Sharp Edge
- Something to make her desk look pretty
A file holder, a beautiful glass or bowl for pens, a funky notepad or notebook, give her something that she can use almost every day. If she likes her life organised and planned, what about a week planner, or pockets for her daily planner-file?
I love this file holder from Mr Price Home
- A comfy throw
A throw that she can wrap around her on cooler nights, maybe when sitting outside spending time with her family, or curled up on the couch reading a book. When it is warmer she can throw it over the couch as part of the room décor. Again, a practical gift that shows you care.
Look at this beautiful one I found at Mr Price Home
A lotion, foot cream, bath oil, scrub, anything that she can use to spoil and treat herself. As busy moms we rarely get the time and chance to pamper ourselves, so make it easier for her. We love products that do the job but doesn’t take time. For me, that means anything “in-shower”. My favourite? Anything by Lush! Try their Body conditioner, massage bars, and my absolute favourite – Rehab shampoo, made with olive oil. Good buy moisturiser for ever!
- Something for the garden
A beautiful pair of gloves, perfect for digging in the garden with.
This pair I found particularly gorgeous: Yuppiechef
Candles, they can set the mood, relax, excite, soothe, inspire. Give her aromatherapy candles for the bathroom, something to light before bed, pretty candles for the dining room, a relaxing one for her desk. Such a nice gift for someone who seem to have everything already!
This soy massage candle from Faithful to Nature is great for a gift
- Compost bin
For moms who want to keep it natural, and who follows the 5 Rs of zero waste (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and ROT) a pretty compost bin is a wonderful gift idea. This way she can keep it in the kitchen without it being an eyesore. I found the perfect one at Mr Price Home, but they are also stocked by most retailers, and come in varying sizes and prices.
- Fluffy towels
I love a good towel. It doesn’t necessarily have to be fluffy, it must just be special in some way. I really really want Afghan bath sheets, but are struggling to find them in RSA, so for now I will settle on a good cotton towel, big enough to wrap around me, absorbent enough to barely have to rub, and of good quality to keep a few seasons. Shop around for towels, I again like going to Mr Price Home for them since I find them to be the best quality for the price I am prepared to pay at the moment. And they are beautiful to look at! Woolworths stock beach towels that are close to Afghan bath sheets, worth having a look!
- Anything for the hostess inside her
If she loves hosting, making people feel at home and special, then get her something for that. An oil and vinegar set, salad servers, a beautiful coffee plunger. Even if she already has something similar, you can never have enough! This oil and vinegar set I have been eyeing for a while now:
- A special tea or coffee
I am a converted coffee drinker, but still have a special place in my heart for tea. Just not boring, everyday tea. If you want to treat me, give me a special tea, something with loose leaves, and flowers, or popcorn, or something that makes it different and totally unique. I have a tea sieve, but a special pot or cup will make this gift go even further! Visit your nearest Tea Merchant shop, or shop online, for their very impressive range of specialty teas and accessories! The Tea Merchant
- A subscription box
This could be the gift that keeps on giving. Every month, she will receive a box filled with special products, and there are so many to choose from! From boxes filled with specialty food products, to wine of the month, gin clubs, magazines, you name it and there will most probably be a box subscription for it. I am a bit of a foodie, so any box that contains food products will have me entranced.
I especially like the look of the Yuppiechef FOMObox:
- A thermos, or travel cup
Perfect for school runs in the morning, and afternoon’s waiting in the car. A good thermos will keep hot things hot, and cool things cold. So get her a great one!
I really want this Ecoffee cup from Faithful to Nature
- Scarf or shawl
A light scarf for cooler summer nights, a thick woollen shawl for cold winter days, a snood, a sarong, the possibilities are endless. Just make sure it is beautiful, of good quality, and in the colours she love.
My current obsessions are all from Woolworths, like this one:
- Anything aromatherapy
Essential oils are my go-to remedy for most of life’s ailments. Lavender for calm, chamomile for a good night’s sleep, peppermint to revive, orange to soothe. Give mom some of her favourite scents, together with a diffuser or burner, and she will reap the benefits! Soil is my favourite brand for essential oils, and they have a nifty burner as well. Available at most pharmacies, Dischem stocks the whole range, and also online from Faithful to Nature.
I hope this list helps, and I also hope my loved ones get hold of it before my next birthday! If there are any products or goods that you would like to add, or gift ideas (especially if you like giving experiences instead of gifts) please add them in the comments!
